Born in Eilenburg, a city near Leipzig, Germany, the clarinet player Marco Thomas started playing the clarinet at the age of 10 and soon showed his talent and looked promising. While attending the Leipzig University of Music, he received a scholarship from the Gewandhaus and became the chief of the Gustav Mahler Jugent Orchestra founded by conductor Abbado. He also entered the Berlin Philharmoniker Academy, where almost everyone is a professional, with a scholarship, and in 1997, at the young age of 24, became the head of the Berlin Philharmoniker Orchestra, the world's premier orchestra. Until he left the group in 1999, he played with the Berliner Philharmoniker with some of the world's leading conductors such as Georg Solti, Claudio Abbado and Daniel Barenboim, leaving many CD recordings. He has also served as a founding member and principal player of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, who later won the Grammy Awards, and a member of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra.
