Turid Karlsen, a world-renowned soprano born in Norway, studied vocal music at the Maastricht Conservatory. Her outstanding singing ability led her to become a permanent singer at the Karlsruhe Opera House in Baden, Germany, in 1985, and in 1992 she moved to the Bonn Theater, where she fascinated audiences as an opera singer until 1997. Since 1997 she has been a freelance opera singer, and has become a popular singer performing numerous operas throughout Europe, the United States, and Canada. She specializes in dramatic soprano repertoire, and in 2004 she played Senta in Richard Wagner's "The Flying Dutchman" at the Norwegian National Opera, winning the Kirsten Flagstad Award. In 2006, she also made headlines by becoming the first soprano to sing the title role of Puccini's "Turandot" at the Gothenburg Opera House since Birgit Nilsson. Some of the theaters where he has performed include the Royal Swedish Opera, Dutch National Opera, Berlin State Opera, and Teatro Real. His fellow performers are also top-notch. Singers such as Plácido Domingo, directors such as Giancarlo del Monaco, conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, and many others. He began teaching at the University of Music in Hamburg in 2009, and has been mentoring students as a professor at the University of Music in Stuttgart since 2011.
