"Learn authentic American jazz in Tokyo"
At the AIMS Music School in Ochanomizu, Tokyo, you can experience jazz saxophone lessons from Raymond McMorrin, who is based in the jazz mecca of New York and Connecticut, and has performed at top venues such as Blue Note and Billboard.
This lesson is a one-time "major practical" lesson provided by AndVision Co., Ltd., a music study abroad agency with a track record of supporting over 5,000 people. This is a special opportunity to experience specialized instrument lessons that are usually conducted as year-round courses. As the Japanese office of overseas music universities and conservatories, AIMS has direct partnerships with over 1 professors from overseas music universities, and provides high-quality music education that is unique to AIMS.
Professor McMorlin was born in the United States in 1979, and began playing tenor saxophone at the age of 11, honing his skills in the United States, the home of jazz. He studied jazz at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and then at the University of Hartford, Connecticut, in the Jazz Performance Department, graduating in 2002. Of particular note is that he studied directly under legendary saxophonist Jackie McLean, who mentored him. In 2004, he performed as a live member of Horace Silver at the Blue Note in New York. After coming to Japan in 2005, he has performed with many well-known musicians both in Japan and abroad, including Terumasa Hino, at famous live houses such as Blue Note Tokyo, Billboard, and Cotton Club. In 2016, he released his debut album "RayMack," and in 2018, his second album "All of a Sudden" was released.
Professor McMorlin's playing style is reminiscent of Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, and Joe Henderson, but is also characterized by free and avant-garde phrasing. His unique style, which combines tradition and modernity, has captivated many jazz fans.
In the 60-minute practical lesson, you will receive detailed instruction tailored to your level, from basic saxophone techniques to tips on improvisation. Professor McMorrin has lived in Japan for nine years and can communicate bilingually in both English and Japanese, so you can learn without feeling any language barriers.
The appeal of these jazz saxophone lessons is that they go beyond simply acquiring technique. During the lessons, you will also learn "musical terminology" used overseas, making them ideal for those considering studying abroad in music in the future. While experiencing the essence of American jazz, you will develop the foundation to be active in the global music scene.
AIMS's practical lessons allow students to learn directly from Professor McMorrin, absorbing the practical techniques and sense he has honed in the field in New York, as well as the sincere spirit of jazz. With instruction that emphasizes a balance between theory and practice, this is a luxurious opportunity to understand the history and traditions of jazz while also acquiring modern ways of expression.
